New Daylight

Nothing gets blocked. Your people know when to check in.

New Daylight watches the bank accounts you connect for transfers to gambling sites, and for repeated deposits into brokerage and trading apps, which for a lot of people is the same behaviour under a friendlier name. If either crosses a threshold, the people you chose get one short email saying how many and over how long. That is the whole service.

It blocks nothing, and it never will. You can move your own money whenever you want. Every blocker you have tried came off in about four minutes anyway, and one more of those helps nobody.

What it changes is who knows. You pick those people now, while things are going well, because 2am is not when anybody makes that decision well. They have to agree. After that they hear from us once a week to say all is well, and sooner if the pattern comes back.

You can remove any of them, or disconnect your bank, at any moment. Both take effect immediately and neither needs anyone's permission. Both are also reported. You keep every way out. What you give up is taking one without anyone noticing.

How it works

One transfer is never reported

A single night out is not a relapse, and an alert that fires on one would be an alert everybody learns to ignore. What gets reported is repetition: several transfers inside the same short window.

The threshold is fixed in the software. There is no setting for it, no slider, and no way to raise your own. That is the first thing anyone reaches for on a bad night.

Why brokerages count

For a lot of people the money never touches a sportsbook. It goes into a trading app, five times in a week, and everything about the feeling is the same. Blockers do not see that at all, because a brokerage is not a gambling site and never appears on anybody's list.

So deposits into brokerage and trading apps are counted, on their own threshold, and reported in their own words. Your people are told there were transfers into investment accounts. They are not told it was gambling, because it might not have been, and telling somebody's family that would be a lie.

If trading was never your problem, this one has a switch and you can turn it off. Doing that is instant, and your people are told you did it. That is the only condition. The gambling side has no switch and never will.

What your people never see

They see a count and a stretch of time. That is the whole disclosure.

What your people cannot do

This matters as much as the alerts do. A tool that hands somebody control over your money is a tool that can be used against you.

Every exit is open, and every exit is reported

Remove a contact, disconnect a bank: both work immediately, and neither needs anyone's permission. Nothing here can trap you, because software that traps somebody in recovery is just another thing being done to them.

But both are also reported to the people you chose. That is the trade, and it is the whole idea. You keep every exit. What you give up is taking one in silence.

What it cannot see

Only the accounts you connect. Open a new account somewhere else and fund it from there, and this will not know. No amount of engineering fixes that, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.

What it does instead is keep telling your people how many accounts are connected. If that number changes, it is a question they can ask.

Who it is for

People who have stopped, or are trying to, and who already know how the quiet part goes. If you have a sponsor, a partner, or a friend who has asked you to tell them when it gets bad, this is the thing that tells them when you cannot bring yourself to.

It is also for the person on the other end. They get one short note a week and nothing else, they are never asked to police anybody, and they can stop at any time without asking you. Being somebody's contact costs them almost nothing, which is the only reason it is fair to ask.

What it costs

Nothing while it is being built. There is no card to enter and no trial to remember to cancel.

Set things up Sign in

It takes about a minute: your email, one person you trust, and your bank connected read-only.
